What Does Your Spirit Look Like?
Written by Paul
Have you ever wondered what your spirit looks like? It looks like you, right?
I believe your spirit mirrors the image of your body. When you are 10yrs old, your spirit looks like you as a 10yr old. Your spirit will look like you at any age you are at. What does your spirit look after death? Does it continue to appear in the image of your body at the age of your death? Plenty of descriptions of spirits abound. Those who experience a near-death and view heaven will explain that they continue on in same form in which their spirit departed their body. When they meet their loved ones, their loved ones appear as if they are in their prime of life. Or they can appear in a form that is more familiar to the person having the near-death experience. This is also described by others who have seen loved ones passed on. They will see their loved one in the image of when the passed.
Your spirit can change its form. If needed, it can grow to become the size of the universe. It can shrink to the size of a virus. Your spirit can appear young, old or in an entirely different from. It could appear as a lamb or a lion. When you are born, a veil is placed over your mind. The mind is different from the spirit, so our spirit also receives a veil. One thing that is forgotten by our spirit is that it can shift its form. The spirit will then need to be reminded how to shift its form. As your progress spiritually, the veil may gradually be removed, helping your spirit to remember.

When Christ appeared to His disciples after His resurrection, they didn’t recognize him. They had to see the wounds in his hands to believe. Mary Magdalene’s experience was recorded in the Gospel of John.
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was
Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be
the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will
take him away. (John 20:14-15)
Interestingly, the Gospel of Mark records that Jesus appeared to others in a different than the way in which He appeared to Mary. “After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country” (Mark 16:12). Could it be that Jesus was appearing in the form of His spirit, which looked different than His body while He lived in mortality? Whatever the case may be, He could clearly transform His appearance to the form that He desired.

What about those that remain in darkness; how do they appear? Let’s just say that our external appearance reflects our internal world. For example, if a person is brutally beaten and murdered. If the person passes with rage in their heart, they will remain in darkness. The spirit will retain the wounds they received prior death. They may appear with torn clothes and an axe in their head. Whatever may be the case, the spirit will still be resonating with that traumatic experience. Eventually, they too will learn how to shift their form. The spirit could change their appearance to a movie star or some monster out of a horror movie. The appearances could be intended deceive someone or to terrorize. A spirit could appear in the classic image of a devil with horns and a tail. There really isn’t much of a limit as how they can appear as. If a spirit does not want to exist, it can become without form, like a puddle of water.
When a person has a deep-rooted conflict with another person, this will create a lot of darkness. When one of the two dies, the person’s spirit will likely remain in darkness. This spirit doesn’t all of a sudden decide to forgive and move on. No, it continues to seek out the destruction of the other person. Of course, Lucifer encourages this. The dark spirit will be allowed to go back to the mortal enemy and, essentially, haunt the mortal. The spirit will mutate its form into a hideous creation and continuously attack the spirit of the mortal. This often strikes much fear into the spirit of the mortal and into their subconscious mind.

Getting back to the lighter side of things, I will begin to discuss the image of the spirit prior to birth. What do you think your spirit looked like before it came to earth? I encourage you to pause and think about this. Our body is a result of our inherited DNA. We, as member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, believe that our spirits were created by God prior to coming to this earth. What do you think our spiritual image appeared to be upon our creation? Do you think God knew what your body was going to be like when you came to earth? Let’s throw in the agency factor. We, Christian, strongly believe in agency, right? Does God force us to choose a particular spouse? Did God already know who every person on the planet was going to marry, so He created our spirits to reflect our future mortal body? What about the spirits that followed Lucifer and didn’t gain a body? What do they look like if they need a mortal body to know what they are supposed to look like? If we take these questions into consideration, we have to assume that agency plays a role in what our physical body looks like. We can choose who we marry. Each child will look different depending upon the couple. I believe this idea is very easily understood. So, our spirits clearly did not look like our mortal body does when they were originally designed.
I’d like to ask again, what do you think our spirits looked like before they came to earth? Keep in mind that our internal world reflects our external world. If we were to continue down the path of perfection, do you think the purity of our spirit would shift our form? What if our spirit was completely without corruption? Exalted? A god/goddess? If our spirit is perfected, what would that look like? Would it look more and more like our Heavenly Father’s? Hmmmm.

Our spirits are formed from structures. There are components within the spirit that create a spirit. If there is a perfected structure for each image, then it seems to me that when the structures come together, they would create an exact replica of someone else’s perfected structures. Is each god an exact replica of each other? No, I don’t believe so, but there could be a very close similarity. Our Heavenly Father is continually increasing His glory. He continues to progress! There is no stopping point when it comes to progression. Heavenly Father’s spirit will increase in power. It is my opinion that His spiritual structures will continue to be strengthened by additional energetic components that we call intelligences. In other words, His intelligence will continue to increase.
The Lord told Abraham concerning intelligences: And the Lord said unto me: These two facts do exist, that there are two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other; there shall be another more intelligent than they; I am the Lord thy God, I am more intelligent than they all (Pearl of Great Price, Abraham 3: 19).
Each person has a different level of intelligence. We gain experience in different areas. The intelligences that comprise our spirits are cleansed, purified and then begin to increase in capacity. We each increase our own understanding in various fields of interest; as a result, spirits are not going to look exactly alike, but they may become very close to the same.

Alma presented some very interesting questions. As he was preaching to the people in Zarahemla, he asked,
“And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have ye spiritually been
born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye
experienced this mighty change in your hearts? . . . I say unto you, can ye look up to
God at that day with a pure heart and clean hands? I say unto you, can you look
up, having the image of God engraven upon your countenances?” (Book of
Mormon,
Alma 5: 14, 19)
I believe that Alma was describing the appearance of a righteous person’s spirit. The spirit of a mortal man has the potential to appear as God’s spirit. Alma was asking the people of Zarahemla if this had already occurred for them.
With the understanding above, what do you think our spirits looked like at the time of our creation? I suspect that the Lord also created each of our spirits to appear very close in form. Our spirits, being pure, likely looked similar to God’s. Through training and various experiences, our spirit took on many different appearances, since our external appearance reflects our internal world. We were actively engaged in assignments from the Lord that would prepare us for godhood and increase our intelligence. After experiencing many eternities, we began to look uniquely different from one another. This is kind of like the snowflake analogy. We all became snowflakes, but no two are exactly alike. Circling back around, as we continue to progress, the appearance of our spirit will return to a closer likeness; one that appears as our Heavenly Parent’s does.
